We are a group of roleplayers aged eighteen to sixty based in Oxford who meet up two or three times a week to play Living Greyhawk games based around the land of Onnwal. Some of us are members of Oxford University, others of us live locally. Groups of us meet up for games on various weekday evening and sometimes at weekends. The details of when and where we meet up for each game and which adventures we play are arranged and announced over our mailing list.
Living Greyhawk is a tabletop roleplaying game set in a fictional high fantasy world, and uses the 3.5 edition Dungeons & Dragons rules. The thing that makes Living Greyhawk different from most tabletop roleplaying games is that it's officially sponsored by Wizards of the Coast (the company who publish the Dungeons & Dragons books) and the RPGA (Role Playing Gamers Association) as an international network of linked games.
The RPGA produce official Living Greyhawk adventure scenarios which can be downloaded from the Living Greyhawk website. Each scenario has a number of different 'difficulty settings' (referred to as "Average Player Levels" or "APLs" ), so that although it always keeps the same plot it can be tailored to present a suitable challenge for a group of characters of any level. Each scenario is run by a Games Master (GM) and played by between four and six players. Together the scenarios all weave into a fascinating and comprehensive campaign set against an incredibly rich and detailed background. Hundreds of different characters all play the same scenarios, and their overall effect on the campaign is judged by how well the majority of characters perform in them.
Once you have created a character to play in Living Greyhawk you can then play that character in official scenarios at various different events all over the world. In addition to playing with your usual group, you can also visit other groups and play your same character with them, not to mention being able to play the character at conventions ranging from small one day events organised by gaming shops and the like to large weekend long conventions such as GenCon. Many of the large conventions premiere new scenarios and run special Convention-only scenarios. Some of them also have what Living Greyhawk terms "interactives", Live RolePlaying (LRP) events which your tabletop character can participate in.
Living Greyhawk games are set in the lands of the Flanaess (of which there's an online map here) on the continent of Oerik in the fictional world of Oerth. Each country in the real world runs scenarios set in a different country in Greyhawk. The UK and the Republic of Ireland run scenarios set in the land of Onnwal, a country recently liberated from the clutches of evil foreign tyrants who were members of an organisation named the Scarlet Brotherhood, this organisation having thrown down the rightful ruler through treachery, assassination and dark magic. The player characters (PCs) in Onnwal scenarios generally take the part of heroic rebels fighting for the Free State of Onnwal, who took back Onnwal's countryside and finally deposed the usurpers and restored the rightful heir to the throne. But now awareness is growing of a darker threat lurking beneath Onnwal's hills...
